Sports Event: UB Kendo Club's 1st WNY Goodwill Kendo Tournament
 |
March 25
The UB Kendo Club has arranged a friendly goodwill tournament for all Western New York Kendo clubs to meet one another and get an introduction to tournament-style competition. Kendo, the art of Japanese fencing, is an ancient martial art dedicated to disciplining the human character through the application of the principles of the Katana (sword).
The UB Kendo Club was founded in 2004 and has grown to become the largest martial arts club on the University at Buffalo campus. Prior experience in Kendo is not required to be a member, but a healthy outgoing attitude is! Many students have joined to enjoy a hard aerobic work out with an exotic twist. Together the members of UB Kendo learn and practice the ancient Japanese martial art of fencing to enrich their collegiate experience and personal lives.

Performance: Acid Mothers Temple
 |
May 2
In 1996, Makoto Kawabata banded together with a bunch of communal friends, musicians, farmers, dancers and fisherman from the Acid Mothers "soul collective" to create what he thought would be a non-continuing outlet for his musical freak-outs.
Listening to Acid Mothers Temple's music and reading interviews with Kawabata, it is apparent that the oddball eccentricities of the band are just a part of the whole. What's at the core of everything is the music, which can easily shift from acid-fueled guitar orgies to acoustic meditative drones. --Pitchfork (text taken from Soundlab upcoming events descriptions)

Jerome Cushman at the 2005 HNA gathering (detail of photo © HNA)
|
Jerome J. Cushman taught, choreographed, directed, and led workshops for more years than he will admit. Since 1974
he has worked at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) at the Rochester Institute of Technology in the performing arts and the Department of Cultural and Creative Studies.
For the past 18 years Cushman's interest has taken him into the world of haiku as a writer, theoretician and performer. In 2000 he originated and co-ordinated the R.F. Panara Haiku Contest for NTID students and deaf college students at the Tsukuba College of Technology in Japan. Because of the success of this contest he has visited Japan 5 times to study and share in the Japanese haiku experience. In 2004 he helped to reestablish the Rochester Area Haiku Group which has monthly meetings and readings. He is also an active member of the Haiku Society of America (HNA) . His works have been printed in a variety of books and magazines.
Dennis Maloney is a poet and translator. He has published several volumes of translations from Japanese, these include Dusk Lingers: Haiku of Issa; Tangled Hair: Poems of Yosano Akiko; and Between the Floating Mist: Poems of Ryokan. In addition he is the editor/publisher of White Pine Press, a non-profit of poetry, fiction, essays, and literature in translation.
