Buffalo-Kanazawa Sister City Committee

About the Buffalo-Kanazawa Sister City Committee

In December 1962 the city of Buffalo joined the United States' Sister City International initiative by connecting with our first sister city, Kanazawa, Japan. Over the years Kanazawa and Buffalo have established a wonderful history of sharing resources. In 1996, Kanazawa was largely responsible for the major renovations to the Japanese Garden of Buffalo providing us with trees, shrubs, paths and the unique stone lanterns.

President of the Buffalo-Kanazawa Sister City, Dr. Takako Michii, regularly takes a delegation of Buffalonians over to Kanazawa to share resources and cultures. Previous trips have included Buffalonians JoAnne Falletta, Sergio Neglia, and Sal Andolina. In 2002, Buffalo artist Neil Tetkowski visited Yuwaku School, the sister school of Buffalo Public Grammar School #71, to install his public commmission art sculpture "Jidai no Keisho" or "Generations in Time", a collaborative artwork between Tetowski and the people of Kanazawa. In 2007, the 45th year of our sister city relationship, the Albright-Knox sent over a special traveling exhibit to Kanazawa's 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art.

Kanazawa, Japan

Kanazawa is one of the most culturally enriched places in Japan. The city was founded in the mid 16th century and has still been able to retain many of its traditions of culture and elegance that distinguished it for hundreds of years.

Today Kanazawa not only continues to preserve its past, but is also taking a lead in advancing modern culture by creating new trends in socio-cultural and economic aspects of Japanese society.

We Buffalonians are blessed by this long time relationship with Kanazawa as a sister city through our various exchanges in education, commerce and resources.
